United has “Red Eye Basic Economy” round-trip flights from Houston (IAH) to New York (EWR) for $153, NONSTOP. $77 each-way. Flights March, July, and August. A few Friday departures are available. “Regular Economy” fares are available for +$50 more.

Note: Red-Eye flights leave early in the morning. If you’re not a fan of these types of schedules, wait for Southwest to have a sale. They often put theirs up with better time-tables and their flights don’t charge a fee for bags.

Note: Carry-on bag is NOT allowed for free. Only a tiny personal item (like a laptop bag) is allowed for free. United’s personal item allowance of (9in x 10in x 17in) is smaller than most other airlines. You can avoid seat selection fees if you accept a randomly assigned seat at the gate. If you have the United MileagePlus credit card you should be able to avoid bag fees with the “free checked-bag” perk.
