Southwest says that they have been granted FAA approval for their flights to Hawaii from California. The airports in California that Southwest will be departing from are Oakland (OAK), San Diego (SAN), San Jose (SJC), and Sacramento (SMF).

The airline’s chief operating officer, Van de Ven says Southwest will announce timing for selling tickets and beginning flights in the coming days. [Source: Hawaii Star Advertiser]

We expect that a fare war will start once prices are announced, and we are estimating that prices will dip into the $250’s to $350’s during the first few months after flights begin. American and United responded to Southwest’s initial announcement of Hawaiian flights last year by dropping prices as low as $251. [List of previous Hawaii deals on Escape Houston].

If you’re wanting to go to Hawaii, we suggest that you wait until after Southwest enters the market. Airfare prices are highly affected by competitive pressure and total capacity, an increase total available seats to Hawaii across various airlines coupled with a new competitor in the market should result in lower prices.
