I want to thank Andrew Pham for finding this great deal. Avianca has cheap airfare from Houston (IAH) to Medellín, Colombia (MDE). Round-trip flights are $537 with a short layover in San Salvador. Mileage accrual is 50%, but it’s still a good deal considering that this fare has a free stopover component and the next best flight out of IAH is $200 more.
Fare has a stopover component, so you can probably turn the San Salvador layover into a stopover if you wanted to spend some time in both cities.
- 2 stopovers permitted on the pricing unit limited to 1 free and 1 at usd 65.00.
I haven’t messed with the free stopover component much, but you should be able to turn the layover San Salvador (SAL) into a stopover or do a stopover in Bogota (BOG) for free (not including landing fees and airport taxes).

I think there may be a comparable route via JetBlue out of Austin (AUS). I’ll add that post later.
