Cheap flights from Austin (AUS) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) are being offered by US Airways / American. Airfare is $199 for round-trip flights with a short layover; usually in Charlotte (CLT). FYI: Miami (MIA) is only 25 minutes by car, so if you would rather be there instead of Fort Lauderdale it’s relatively easy to do that.
If you’re wanting to visit more of Florida, you can take advantage of the free open-jaw available on this fare and return from Orlando (MCO) instead of Fort Lauderdale (FLL). You could pick up a car in Fort Lauderdale and return it in Orlando and catch your flight back from there instead of just doing this as a round-trip. I’m seeing rental costs of about $18 dollars a day, well worth the mobility. Orlando (MCO) takes about 3 hours to get to from Fort Lauderdale if you’re being serious about getting there. If you’re stopping to gawk at stuff (recommended) then it will take longer.
