American Airlines has round-trip flights from Houston (HOU/IAH) to Brisbane (BNE) for $847 with a connection. Flights in December, February, and March. Extended weekends available. Dates over Christmas are available.
You may be able to find this for a bit cheaper by adding stops or really long connections. We don’t think doing that is worth it.
A Carry-on bag and also a personal item is allowed for free on American. You can avoid paying for seat selection by accepting the randomly assigned seat at the gate.
I’m seeing cheap airfare from Austin (AUS) to several cities in Australia. Round-trip flights to Melbourne (MEL), Sydney (SYD), and Brisbane (BNE) are going for about $1170 at the moment, which is about $500 less than what the route is normally priced at. Fare rules allow a free stopover, so you will probably want to do a multi-city itinerary rather than a round-trip.
