Today’s USD/JPY exchange rate is the best it’s been for American tourists visiting Japan since 1986. It’s currently 163 USD per JPY at time of writing.
Prices for flights have been in an uptrend since February of this year, so flights are more expensive than they usually are, but I think that your overall costs will be lower due to cheaper Japanese goods/services when you arrive.
I’m aware that Zipair has cheaper fares listed in the $750-$890 range, but those fares end up being more expensive once you factor in bag fees and meal fees. Note that Zipair does not have IFE, so you’ll need to provide your own entertainment during the flight.

This will be cheaper than Zipair flight once you factor in bag and meal fees that Zipair has; which United has for free.

We’re aware of the $793 Aug-Sep, 1-stops on AA (link). We’re also aware of the Aug-Oct Zipair Nonstops for $734. Neither of those deals have dates into next year. Furthermore, you will have about +$200 in Zipair fees if you want meals and bag allowance greater than 15-lbs.

Yes, we’re aware that Zipair has “cheaper” $678 fares to Tokyo in August, but those fares charge and additional +$208 for bag, seat, and meal. After fees it ends up costing you $893, which is more expensive than this United fare.

United allows a regular sized carry-on bag, while Zipair has strict weight limit of 7kg. You can avoid seat selection fee by accepting the randomly assigned seat at the gate.

Aim for a late September into mid October trip for better temperatures. August is still Hot.

Avoid August the hottest month in Japan. I’ve only been during August once, for Tanabata, and that was all it took for me to never go during that time.
Late September into October is nice however.
